About Us

How Firefly Started

Firefly started with two friends, Dan and Matthew, who shared a passion for drones, both already part of the community helping new pilots learn to fly and build FPV drones. FPV has a steep learning curve, paired with the rush of flying freestyle or racing through a building at extreme speed — nothing else matches the challenge. That passion grew into something bigger: a drive to help push the UK to the front of drone capability for its armed forces, at a time when that capability matters more than ever.

We came from different backgrounds that turned out to complement each other perfectly. Matthew is process-driven and calm under pressure; Dan comes from an IT and business background. Working the same problem from opposite ends and meeting in the middle is how Firefly gets built.

What We Build Today

Today, Firefly UAV designs, builds and codes drone systems for defence, security and tactical operations. Our range spans 5" to 13" FPV platforms, purpose-built systems like the Bolt Interceptor and Vulcan EW, and smaller specialist platforms such as the micro-drone FireFly and the cyber-payload CyberFly — alongside the payload, dropper, gimbal and battery hardware that goes with them. On the software side, DarkLake and MissionLink give operators a single place to view, manage and distribute video and telemetry from drones across different platforms and vendors, instead of juggling separate feeds and separate tools.

Built In-House, Sourced Globally

Everything is designed and built in-house: our own CAD, carbon fibre CNC and 3D printing, our own battery packs spot-welded and assembled under one roof in the UK, and our own code for the systems we sell. We’re a proudly British company, and we work deliberately with manufacturing partners across the UK, Europe, the US and allied nations so that no single country’s supply chain is the only option on the table. That same philosophy extends to training — we run pilots through a structured pathway from first flights to tactical operations on our own platforms.

For buyers who need a specific, verifiable component sourcing standard — NDAA-compliant parts, UK/European-only sourcing, or a mix built to a programme’s own requirements — see Sovereign Builds: NDAA and Blue UAS Explained.
